D.I.Y. TURF INSTALLATION
Follow our step by step guide to create your own lush, green looking lawn |
Step 1. Determine the right turf for your area
-
To do this a few quick questions will assist in determining the right turf for your area.
-
Is the area sunny or shady?
-
- Broader leaf turf varieties such as Turf Forces Sapphire Buffalo will grow in either sun or shaded areas. A minimum of 2 hours sun a day will see this turf thrive.
-
If you prefer a turf with a much softer feel and look then Turf Forces Couches (Grand Prix, Wintergreen) or Salt Tolerant turf (Velvetene) could be a viable option. If selecting one of these varieties your area must receive at least 5-7 hours of full sun per day. If not these varieties will have trouble in surviving.
|
-
Do you require a drought tolerant turf?
-
- Our limited water supply in QLD is a major factor especially when choosing a turf type. Turf Forces Sapphire Buffalo is renowned for its drought tolerance and over all hardiness. Compared to other couch varieties on the market Grand Prix couch has exceptional drought tolerance and is very hardy with quick recovery rates.
|
-
Will the turfed space be in a high traffic area?
- Both Sapphire Buffalo and Grand Prix Couch have good thresholds when it comes to high wear and tear areas from the likes of human traffic or pets. Turf Forces Velvetene and other Couch varieties such as Wintergreen have reasonably good wear and tear capabilities too.
|
-
Are you close to the sea or do you live in area where soil ph levels are high or low?
-
- If so consider our Velvetene Salt tolerant turf . Velvetene will grow naturally in poorly drained clay soils, whether excessively wet, salty or somewhat dry, and salty beach sand.

- Step 2: Soil Preparation
-
Ground preparation is essential if you are to obtain good quality results. We recommend that you:
-
-
- Remove all existing turf and weeds. This can be done by using a safe herbicide - ideally weeds should be cleared 7-10 days before turfing.
- Rotary hoe or spade the soil to a suitable depth or if the area requires excavation, inquire about our bobcat or turf cutter service. Doing this will help limit the possibility of any weeds or other grasses growing through your newly laid lawn.
- Ensure the area is free of any debris such as sticks and stones.
- Cover the area with a good quality top soil and level out using a rake.
- To firm the soil, roll area lightly but do not compact it and fill in any low spots.
|
Step 3: Measuring and Ordering Turf
Measuring
Measure your proposed lawn area accurately in square metres - see below for our measuring guide (NB Please add 5% to your final calculations to cover wastage and cutting in of edges) or you can contact Turf Force for assistance on measuring.

Unusual Shapes
Measure metres by firstly dividing area into sections of regular shapes ie: Circle, Square and Triangle. To calculate the required amount of Turf in square metres apply formulas above for each shape.
Measuring Different Widths
Measure metres by firstly measuring the length of the longest axis across the area. Every two metres along the length line measure the width of the area at right angles to the length line. Total all widths, divide by number of width section and multiply by length.
Example: Length 9 metres: width (1) 3 metres: width (2) 5 metres: width (3) 4 metres.
Total widths is 12 (3+5+4), divide by 3 = 4 multiply by length 9 = 36 square metres.
Ordering
Ring Turf Force on 1800 FOR GRASS (367 472) or email sales@turfforce.com.au to place your order. Have the total of your measurements ready. Please notify staff our if you will require fertilser and water saving crystals.
Upon delivery turf be ready to lay the turf within 12 - 48 hours. In hotter periods the earlier it is put down the better.
Step 4: Laying Your New Lawn
Ensure the ground preparation has been completed and the under soil is level and firm. We recommend you evenly distribute a starter fertiliser over the area to be turfed. This will provide the root structure with the required nutrients to bind with the soil. An application of Water crystals is also recommended to help your turf through the dryer times. Water crystals act like a sponge under the turf, they absorb the water when it rains or when the turf is watered. In dryer times the roots will sink into the expanded crystals and slowly draw the water out over time. Crystals will last for up to 6 years.
Laying
- Start by laying the first row along a straight edge such as the garden edge, path or driveway.
- Continue on laying each slab in a common brick pattern and remember to stagger the joints in each row.
- Make sure all joins are butted tightly together avoiding any overlapping or spaces between slabs of turf.
- Use a large knife or shovel to shape and trim excess turf around trees, garden edges etc.
- After installation and initial watering, roll turf lightly to eliminate air pockets and to ensure contact between turf and soil.
- As turf is a living plant you must begin watering your new lawn within 30 minutes of installation. Turf requires ground contact and moisture to survive.
Your turf will need to be properly established over 3 weeks after its installation. Refer to our Turf Maintenance and Care guide for ongoing up keep. |
